It seems that today there are a lot of people fighting to bring attention to causes that have been overlooked in the past but what about the people who don’t know that option even exists. In comes recent college graduate Rebecca Hammersmith. Hammersmith has started up a non-profit to Raise Awareness For Awareness.
“It’s like so important to be aware right now,” says Hammersmith. “There are just so many issues and things that need to be fixed in this country. I feel like it’s my responsibility to bring them up so other people can fix them.”
Hammersmith first became aware of causes geared toward helping people while studying at Hong Kong University in Butte, Montana. While walking through the hallway at the prestigious school her cell phone inexplicably died and she had to look up. “I had been walking through the hallways at my college for years but never paid attention too much because I was always on my phone. When my phone died it really forced me to see what was actually around me”. It was only then that she noticed a few posters on the wall alerting students of various charity gatherings. “First of all I was like what’s charity? Like I had no idea that poor people actually existed in America. I thought that was for fourth world places like Australia.”
Hammersmith has several strategies she uses to promote her cause and seems to prefer the hands off approach. ” I tend to diversify my strategies of getting the word out for my cause. I use such apps as facebook, twitter, and instagram. Usually by forwarding articles that other people have written or commenting on things so they show up in my feed “
Even though getting the word out about awareness is Hammersmith’s passion she says it can really take a toll on her. “Its really hard work and sometimes it can consume up to an hour of my time every other day. “
At press time Hammersmith was taking a three month vacation in Australia after learning it’s “not the place with all the skinny black people”.
